Hi all,I just completed in Jardines 5 last week, and have a first mortgage payment due the last day of this month.
CAM bank opened me up a sterling current account and a euro current account, the euro mortgage being serviced by these.
Has anyone out there started paying by the same method? Is it simply a matter of  transferring sterling from my bank to the sterling current account? How long does it take for this to clear and is this deemed an international transfer?is there a charge?
I know I will have to contact my own bank on these points but hopefully some-one already knows the ropes and can advise.
Thanks
John.

Don't  know if this is a standard issue in Spain or if the banks are all on holliday

we completed middle of last month and other than some slips which we dont understand coming through the post we have had nothing in the way of correspondence until a response to one of many e-mails arrived yesterday.

after several e-mails i have tied the bank down to an apointment which will be a day before i am due to make payment for the mortgage which i have just received yesterday the amount we will be paying.

we are to receive debit cards and are setting up internet banking (need to keep eyonbankaccount)

Keep on at your bank till you get answers.

Phone up the bank and we are unable to communicate it's frustrating

Intternet banking is hopefully our solution.

Tony

I guess you are all refering to CAM Bank, who, from all the previous threads, seem to be quite honestly hopeless.

I opened my Spanish bank account with SolBank via their London office.
2 Days later I received all the account information, 3 days after that the debit cards and the internet banking log-in.

Within 3 days of them receiving any transfers from us we receive a confirmation in the post from our branch in Spain.

We have visited the branch in Puerto Mazarron where the staff speak excellent english and are very helpful.

I know this does not help anyone already with CAM but for those who need to sort out a Spanish bank I cannot recommend SolBank highly enough.

Hi All

We are currently in the process of looking around for a Spanish bank account, in anticipation of our completion in October.  We were going to use Cam Bank but having read the threads on them, we are now not so sure.  Having looked at Solbank after Phil's comments they certainly look o.k., but opinions from anybody out there as to who they have used and if they are any good would be great.

Thanks

Alison & Simon

We went with Halifax as they seem very easy to deal with, any queries you can speak to them on the phone, everyone I spoken to have been English as well.

Even the lady from our local branch in Mazarron called me and was English, they don't charge for transfers between a UK and Spanish Halifax account, i transfrered 600 Euros on Monday and got a rate 1.235 which I didn't think was too sad for a bank rate.

You can set up the account from the UK , we did look at few others but I just liked the idea that any problems I may encounter could be dealt with by just a phone call to their UK call centre.

Thanks Dan

Thanks for your comments.

I guess from what you say it's only free to transfer money to Spain if your UK bank account is also with the Halifax. (we're with the Nationwide).  Not that this is a real problem, as I'd factored in having to pay to transfer money.  Does the ability to call the UK with potential issues, also only apply if you have a UK based Halifax account.

Cheers

Alison & Simon

I bank with Barclays so had to open a UK Halifax account just to transfer money to, which was no big deal.

The contact number I have on my welcome pack for Halifax Spain appears to be based in the UK (0845 6003603)

Hi Simon,

I opened an account with halifax (Mazarron).   Details are on  http://www.halifax.es/halifaxing/default/default.asp?lang=EN or you can go into a UK branch.  They need copies of passport, bills etc. and you can go into a local halifax and get them to sign the copies, which makes it easier.  It is free transfers from a UK Halifax account - which ties you into them for fx! - I haven't used them so can't comment on their fx rates.  I have found the staff in Mazarron very helpful, especially on my first trip, when my card got retained in a machine on the first night!!

The UK number is for the Spanish Bank service - even without a UK Halifax account.

Ted

Hi all,
I took Stonephils advice  about 2 weeks ago  and we went with solbank and have our account open.  The london office is under refurbishment till sept so we can go to mazzaron to pick up our cards etc.
I also have 3 moneychangers now, currencies direct, currencys solutions and just yesterday opened up Moneycorp.  all were offering 1.26 odd  today so I phoned up Nationwide my bank and on 70k they quoted for today 1.29.  This would be done by bacs transfer and costs about £20, if you do it before 12pm it will be there the same day. So I am waiting for the finale amount and I will do it that way and have done a few times before. You would have made more than that in interest so it pays for itself.
Just a little tip if using a money changer ask for the corporate amount its not much more half a euro maybe but it all helps.

One thing to watch on the completion - the spanish banks can be quite expensive on bankers drafts - I think it worked out at about €150 for the completion cheque through Halifax in Spain.  I got a Euro draft from a UK Bank (Bank of Scotland - so same group for about £20!  If you are transferring the completion funds to your Spanish account, paying for the transfer, and then the draft you may be hit double, so worth checking if Nationwide can issue the Euro draft for you to take over to Spain with you (if you are going there to complete).  If they do it should be drawn on a Spanish Bank so as not to cause problems with clearance in Spain.

Interested to read comments about Cambank....

I opened an account with them.  They gave me a debit card, cheque book, internet access and contact number for english speaking service.
I've been using the online service and found it extremely easy to use and understand.

Can't just be lucky....?

Hi

I to opened an account with Cam Bank, I had no problem what so ever, I got debit card, credit card, cheque book, internet online service and they have staff who speak english. I tranfer money every month so that I will have enough to pay  the bills, and within a few days they send me a statement to say that the money is in the account. So far no problems with cam

Ruth

Yes that is what I done, send tranfer to solicitor and they draw up the cheque for PW

Hi,

My solicitor has recommended Caja Murcia for the mortgage as they are used by the builders in Los Naranjos. Just wondered if anyone has any experience of using them. Quote 532 Euros/month on a 25 year 78K Euro Mortgage. 3.1K Euros for mortgage registration that includes notary etc. Also 1% mortgage set up.

Rgds

Paul

its far cheaper to increase your uk mortgage if room although  you cant offset rental income against mortgage payments .spanish mortgages are very expensive at the moment.fees etc are very high be careful and read the small print.

Hi Paul - Don't know how you managed that but ourselves and at least one other buying on Naranjos have been trying to get info from Caja Murcia since about May/June time and all we keep getting in reply is: We don't have all the information for the developers Mortgage yet, we will contact you next week?? The mind boggles - So that we weren't left in the lurch we have gone through a broker, although they are waiting to see what Cajamurcia are offering before proceeding elsewhere
