Barry,
yes each course will have a Slope & Rating, the slope as you say is 140, but the rating is the dificulty of the course itself. For example, my current course is a Par 70, but has a course rating off the back tees of 71. My old course was a par 72, but has a course rating difficulty of 74. Thus this is the course standard scratch ( CSS ). This is generally based on what a scratch golfer would go round in
Course rating is very easy to understand because it is expressed in strokes. A par-72 course that is easy might have a course rating of 68.9; one that is difficult might have a course rating of 74.5. That means that a scratch golfer should be expected to average 68.9 strokes in his better rounds at the easier course; and 74.5 at the more difficult one.
Might be worth having a read at the below links, but it looks as there is no CSS in Spain, the course has ratings & slope valuse just like a US course

Rich,
From memory I got 17 shots off a 13 hdcp differential. So I'd estimate the rating is about 72.9 off the normal tees.
Thats my calculation based on the slope of 140 and assuming a 89 gives a hdcp differential of 13...so I may have messed it up!!

Switch off now if you are not a golfer!
Basically there are two systems. The UK generally adopts the standard scratch score - which in effect alters the par of the course on any given day. e.g. an open championship course may be par 72 but has a SSS of 75. So if you went round in net 72 you would be 3 shots below your handicap.
The European/US system does measure the difficulty of any course but differentiates on the players handicap not par of the course. This is the slope system.
If the course is very easy it may have a slope index of 50. the hardest course would be rated at 150. Condado de Alhama signature course has a slope rating of 140 which shows it is one of the toughest course to play. e.g. if you are 28 handicap in the UK you will get 36 shots at Condado! A 5 hadicapper gets 7 shots.
However the cut of point for each extra shot received on the slope system is not simple - at Condado 15.0 gets 19 shots and 15.1 gets 20 shots! This cut off point will vary at every course depending on its slope rating. These are posted at each course.
After 30 years golfing in the UK I prefer the european slope system. The formula for working the slope out is too complicated to post here but research it on the web if you are bored!

I think it gets confusing when people come from the UK where you have a specific handicap and that remains constant on every course. Whereas when you play under the slope system you have a "slope handicap" which is different to the course handicap depending on the slope of the individual course.
I do think us players from UK and Ire where we don't use the slope system get an advantage at CdA over those who use the slope system...although it certainly hasn't shown up in my scores.
If you played at a difficult course in the UK (on par with CdA) on a 10 hdcp you would claim the slope adj and play off say 12 at CdA. However if you played at a difficult course somewhere else under the slope rules (again on par with CdA) on a 10 hdcp for that course your slope handicap would be lower and therefore the slope adj would only bring you up to 10 at CdA.
I'm just glad I don't have to do the handicaps for the society!!!

Sheet is now up in shop for Seve charity day at Aguilon golf on sunday April 29th..
It is a shotgun start at 09.30 and is great value at 35 euros (20 euros donated to Seve charity).
This includes a buggy, baguette at half way, barbeque after and free beer (unlimited!) Also plenty of prizes to play for.
Shotgun start means only 72 players can play so anyone interested needs to get their name down quick.
Barry.
