I never expected political, legal and financial freedom to come without implications, however nothing worth having ever comes for free, our own systems are far from perfect, but at least they are ours, and in so being are our responsibility.

Hep
fair sentiment
for me being an EU citizen the EU was "our" system not perfect .............................
but hey ho we have what we have and we shall see if further devoltion comes about as some may want their political, legal and financial freedom from the union of the UK / Westminster

The problem I have with the ''it will be worth the pain' brigade, is that by and large, it is going to be the younger generations that are feeling the pain, when they mostly voted for the status quo. Even if things do pick up outside the EU (and I sincerely hope they do), it will be years before any benefits filter through. 5 -20 years is a long time out of a young person's life. And one for Sunderland - Nissan said today they are putting plans for the Sunderland site on hold as they want to have an EU base. That should work well for the people of Sunderland.

Well Roly, I was aged 4 when rationing ended, the city I lived in was finally rebuilt from the blltz in the 1960's, I've lived without central heating, double glazing, but with regular power cuts, the real threat of WW111, wage freezes etc, but I've managed to come out of it all intact. I obviously never experienced any pain such as not being able to move into my own property, fully newly furnished with every gadget known to mankind as soon as I started working, my heart bleeds for the poor little sods.

We are circa £1250 p/a worse off in respect of the BOE halving it's interest rate, however we have made far more than that on our equity investments, the dividends are really good. Our son and his wife have a 50% LTV very cheap mortgage on a property that has increased in value by circa 10% over the last year. We are not dependent on exchange rates and have zero dept, perhaps the circa 300K legal expats residing in Spain should realise that they are not really that important in the greater scheme of things.

Yep Roly, that's the one, virtually 100% employment, police on the streets, doors left unlocked, I presume that you weren't there as even a cynic like you would have appreciated how quickly we were evolving from wartime Britain. I bought a brand new car in 1967, and I paid cash for it, I purchased an apartment in 1972, paid a £1K deposit, bought carpets and furniture from savings and waited a few months until I could buy a 19" colour TV with cash
I find Britain a very miserable place now, full of serial losers who blame everything and everyone for their own failings, Brexit is like manna from heaven to them.

oh dear here we go typical brits looking backwards at "how great we were and how things were far better" back when \i was a lad
said this before our so called great history is littered with violence, greed, poverty, child labour, racism, sexism,a class system, religous fanatics. war mongerers etc etc etc
what next roll out the 1966 world cup squad

Then again Tadd,
It was part of our history and even as a lad born in 55 I did manage to have a brilliant childhood.
(I was in the film Kes as a schoolboy, it was filmed where I was, it was showing in France 3 weeks ago where I was ha ha)
Anyway, if we have come through all that and we are better for it, why stay in a state or union where a lot of the countries still subscribe to those old problems? What's the point in that

fair comment
while you and others (like me) maybe enjoyed a childhood many familes probably not far from us sufferd the racism, abuse, violence etc and what we did outside of the UK invading countries, forcing our beliefs and standards on them, forcing them into slavery etc etc etc.................................
Have we really learned from our violent, greedy history- an emphatic NO
Do will still glorify and pine for the good old days of the empire, crusdaes, 50's and 60's etc. - sadly we do
Are we all heading backwards - possibly
we are out good or bad so no point debating that
my point is simple the Uk is not (and never has been) any greater or better than anyone else and never will be

Perhaps I'm wrong and there was something wrong with great music, safe streets, affordable music and sporting venues, I saw Chuck Berry live in 1962, the admission price was £1.00, the programme two shillings (I still have it), on the bill was The Graham Bond Organisation (featuring Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce), Long John Baldry and The Moody Blues, not bad eh? I saw Pele, Eusabio, Best, Charlton, Moore along with many more play live, they earned a fraction of what today's prima donnas are paid
Folk that are unable to look back and smile never had a life in the first place, they were boring then and are boring now, and as for our violent, greedy history, we abolished the death penalty in 1964, whilst Spain were still garrotting folk as late as 1975. What I fail to comprehend is why the self confessed haters of all things UK (pensions excepted) and have left it's shores for good can't stop insulting it,for christ's sake get a life.

Stop living in the past and look forward
Remember admission fees and costs are relative to income
I try to smile and hope about the future not dream of the past through rose tinted glasses
Memories and history good or bad cannot be changed

Look forward to what, a wooden box? If I were to be as miserable as some when reflecting on my younger days, I might as well have never been alive in the first place. But then again I have all the other personas that i am accused of having don't I? I just hope that one of them is a damned sight younger than 69.
