What do you mean by immigrants
EU or non eu
What is too many
As a thought if 25% of the Scottish population moved to London and they were deemed too many would you send them back

This thread is drifting into La La Land, there are no economists, politicians, top business executives, leading journalists, etc; on it, just opinions from folk posting on a pretty low key forum. If I were a UK expat living in Spain I would be far more interested in UK pension payments in Spain and post Brexit residence rights than trade deals, but I'm not, so will stand back until there is something tangible to talk about.

Two British residents in Spain have been awarded honours by Her Majesty The Queen in the New Year Honours List 2017 as published on December 30th, in The Gazette, the UK’s official public record. Liz Parry, former Editor of SUR in English, an English-language newspaper in Southern Spain, and resident in the province of Malaga, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to British nationals living in Andalusia. Roger Cooke, latterly President of the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain and resident in Madrid, has been appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to British business in Spain and British-Spanish trade and investment. Honours lists are published twice a year, on the Queen’s official birthday in June and at New Year, and recognise extraordinary achievement and service to the UK. Following a nomination process, an honours committee reviews all the submitted nominations. The Queen then awards the honour. In the cases of Ms Parry and Mr Cooke, their outstanding achievements ensured they stood out amongst the many nominations received for this year’s New Year Honours list. Having joined the SUR in English team in 1985 as a collaborator/translator, during her 30 years of service Liz Parry rose through the ranks at the paper, first to Assistant Editor in 1997 and then soon after to Editor. When SUR in English was launched in July 1984, there was no or little reliable information available to British nationals resident in Spain in English. Under Parry’s command, the paper has grown from 3000 copies and 24 pages to 150,000 copies and an average of 72 pages. It subsequently plays an important role in helping British nationals to integrate into Spanish society and avoid some of the potential problems that moving to another country might present. An active member of the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) in Spain since 1992, Roger Cooke took on the non-remunerated post of President in April 2012, at the height of the economic crisis. During his Presidency, Cooke not only ensured the stability of the operation but revitalised the institution, dedicating a significant amount of his personal time to build stronger relationships with external partners, such as the Spanish government and major British companies operating in Spain. Having stepped down as President of the BCC earlier this year, Cooke remains committed to promoting relations between the UK and Spain. He is an active member of the British Hispanic Foundation, an organisation which promotes cultural links between the two countries, and a strong supporter of the British Benevolent Fund, a British charity which supports British nationals in need in Spain. Simon Manly, the British Ambassador to Spain, was among was among the first to congratulate the pair. "I am delighted that the achievements of Liz Parry and Roger Cooke have been recognised by Her Majesty The Queen in this way, whether it be Liz through her distinguished journalism and consistent promotion of Britons' integration into Spanish society, or Roger and his leadership of the British Chamber, our principal partner in strengthening a €46 billion bilateral commercial relationship" Reacting to the news of her award, Liz Parry said: "I am delighted and proud to have been awarded this medal for service to British residents in our international community! It came as a complete surprise and I don't know who nominated me, but I would like them to know that I am honoured and grateful". Roger Cooke, similarly surprised, said: “I am delighted to receive this award and that a contribution to Anglo-Spanish trade has been recognised at a time when this is so important to both countries' economic wealth and to their citizens. As always there is a team effort behind this success and it would not have been achieved without the great support of the team at the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain.” Last July in the Queen's Birthday Honours list Maura Hillen, who has campaigned tirelessly for expats affected by planning abuses in southern Spain, was awarded an MBE. The head of Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No! (AUAN), an organization that campaigns for the legalization of homes declared illegal by planning authorities has been appointed an honorary Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), for services to the British community in Spain. Originally from Ireland, Hillen has steered the lobby group that represents more than 500 expat members with homes in the Almanzora Valley in Almeria, southern Spain. AUAN has campaigned at the local, regional and national level for the legalization of homes, to get them properly connected to water and electricity, with mitigation of the costs of doing so, and called for information and support for affected home owners. In May last year she was also elected to the local council and is now the councillor for Tourism & International Relations in Albox, Almeria, and a deputy mayor. "Since 2008, Maura Hillen MBE has made a tireless contribution towards resolving the property problems that affect thousands of British homeowners in Spain. I am very pleased that Her Majesty The Queen has approved this honour, which recognises her dedication and resilience," said Simon Manley, British ambassador to Spain, announcing the award on Tuesday. "Under her leadership, AUAN is a professionally-run, well-respected organisation that has secured expert legal advice and in turn proposed realistic solutions to the Spanish regional and national authorities.Last year saw the group win a victory with the introduction of legislation to protect thousands of homeowners across the Spanish costas whose properties are threatened with demolition after falling foul of planning laws. "In March last year, the Criminal Code was modified following proposals from AUAN that judges take into account that most owners purchased in good faith, and that compensation should be paid prior to any demolition," explained Manley. "That was a significant step forward in reforming a legal system that AUAN argued had failed adequately to recognise the rights of homeowners or compensate for their losses." “I know Maura intends to keep campaigning for more action to resolve outstanding cases and to increase the legal security for future buyers.” Hillen, who moved to Almeria province from Weybridge, Surrey with her British husband said she was thrilled with the recognition. "I am very pleased and delighted to accept this award not only for myself but on behalf of every member of AUAN who has also played no small part in defending the rights of homeowners in Spain, most especially committee members, past and present, and those that came before me as president of AUAN," she said "This award is a recognition and vindication of their efforts and perseverance as much as it is of mine."

"As a thought if 25% of the Scottish population moved to London and they were deemed too many would you send them back"
Bit of an odd proposition that, as we have been one free state for three hundred years and we are all entitled to live anywhere in the UK.
I would guess that over those three hundred years 25% of the Scottish population may well have moved to the SE of England. I have Scottish ancestry and nearly 10% of the seniors at our golf club were scottish born, last time I looked.
My brother is married to a scottish lady so his children have more Scottish ancestry than English.
If we had remained in the EU with it's policy of 'ever closer union' I would have expected the movement of people to the more prosperous areas to continue to our detriment in the short term. But in the long term, if there was an USofE with us in it, then wherever became the commercial centre would attract the migrants and the UK would become a quaint offshore island.

Elsietanner,
What a lovely positive posting and so encouraging to know that these inspiring individuals can be recognised for all their endeavours that have made their mark over the years.
It's inspiring to know that there are individuals who have an ability to harness realistic optimism, self belief coupled with resilience, determination, honesty and rational communicative skills that can make their mark in life, especially where justice is concerned. I'm in awe to be honest.
I just wish we had more well rounded role models with such attributes ( especially optimism and courage) in these challenging times to tackle and solve signigicant compromising issues that so negatively impact citizens everyday lives.
Who knows perhaps such aspects as Brexit has exposed will be the wakeup call to gradually refocus on citizens genuine needs and rights and restore some well overdue balance away from excessive corporate greed, misuse of power, manipulative attempts to misinform, and attain greater accountability in that process. Quite a tall order....

how does this work? Who knows what intertwining there has been between Scottish and English and Welsh and Irish people in the past, who crossed which border, when borders changed, who married from where, when potatoes were blighted. Etc etc.
We don't breed like whippets and horses round my way y'know!,,,
