Prime Minister Theresa May has been warned by a leading German politician that she is 'delusional' if she believes she can get a good trade deal from Donald Trump.
Axel Schafer, a senior member of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Social Democrat coalition party, said Mrs May's hope that President-elect Trump will look favourably on the UK will come to nothing.
Referring to the shock election of Mr Trump, Mr Schafer told The Times: 'What changed is the likelihood of a speedy and preferential trade deal between UK and US.
'Even before Tuesday the chances were rather low, now the hope for this kind of deal seems delusional.'
The pointed remarks came after ministers talked up the chances of a close working relationship with the surprise winner of the race to the White House.
Underlining the starkly different approach to Mr Trump, 70, taken by London and the continent, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told his EU counterparts to end the 'whinge-o-rama' over the outcome of the US election.
Mr Johnson was unlikely to attend a European 'crisis' meeting on Sunday to discuss the result of the US presidential election.
The tone was in marked contrast to that of European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, who said: 'I think that we'll waste time for two years while Mr Trump tours a world that he is completely unaware of.
***** 'We have to teach the new president of the USA what Europe is, and how it works. *****
Better idea would have been to teach themselves.

Well the £ € tourist exchange rate stands at 1.1445 with TFX this morning, it has almost reached it's 2013 rate. I was listening to an interview with Ian Duncan Smith who stated that the 'Special Relationship' between the UK and USA ceased to exist 8 years ago, when Obama became president, perhaps he and his 'establishment' minions in the US Treasury conspired to destroy Sterling post Brexit and have ceased their dirty tricks now that Trump has been elected.
I hear bacofoil are now doing a good line in hats.

Trump is already shamelessly rowing back from campaign promises. What fools they take the electorate for. Someone once said “If voting really changed anything they would make it illegal” So true.
No more then what our own mob are trying to do to us right now.

The term divide and rule comes to mind here, so perhaps we should all be striving for a mutually good outcome? 😉

One person's "Misrepresentation, clutching at straws, losing credibility etc" is another persons "blinkered to some uncomfortable realities or not prepared to consider a wider perspective or alternative analysis".
Each to their own.
Any response to the wider perspective?
Its patently clear I was discussing the UKs economic performance, and Ted has completely misrepresented what I said. Why would you defend something like that? Are you being a hypocrite?
As regards the "wider perspective", I dont see anything of any consequence besides a bunch of whingers who blame immigrants for all their ills, instead of looking at their own failings. In an economy of 4.9% unemployment, if you cant or wont get a job, get off your ass and get some kind of qualification. Improve yourself, get a trade or get an education. Thats the hard part. The easy part is blaming everyone else around you while you sit on the sofa munching chips and watching daytime soaps.
Even if you could magically get rid of the immigrants overnight, there will STILL be a bunch of people sitting on their sofas, too addicted to the socialist handout to get off their asses and work for a living. They still wont have a trade or qualifications, and are too lazy to work farms or other manual labour.
Then who are you going to blame or marginalise?

There we go again misrepresenting the intent and bold generalisations , when this is an educational exercise to widen the perspective and look at this from all angles instead of a constricted impartial view.
Again, I repeat, to imply all the blame is on the migrants is so wrong it is the SYSTEM at fault, and rather than ignore such, or add to division. instead of rational debate, does no favours to achieving mutually agreeable solutions.
Best we leave it there but look forward to good calm rational debate and willingness to look to all aspects and failures from ( I repeat) BOTH sides of the debate in order to gain greater transparency.
Best regards.

Tin hats,
I prefer an Anderson shelter marieday, however Spanish town halls would probably fill them in, and charge for doing so.

Destry,
Have you ever thought of becoming a comedy script writer, ha!
This is hilarious if it wasn't so sad.
What do they say "laughter is the best medicine.........." a great stress buster and breaks the ice, so good on you for attempting to diffuse the situation (I presume that was your intent? )

Quote - Mark Twain.
'The political and commercial morals of the United States are not merely food for laughter, they are an entire banquet'.
I can only imagine what Mr Twain might have had to say about the EU.

So you're happy to hypocritically endorse Teds twisting of facts, not respond to such challenges, and then sweep it under the carpet under the serpentine guise of "lets leave it there".
We shall indeed leave it there. I did try, but this is just one too many times for me.
Goodbye and good luck.

No. Trump gained only half of the popular vote the remainder are perfectly sain..
“The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes.” Winstone Churchill.
Only the next four years can tell if that is true. The great thing about democracy and the US system is the man can be chucked out in a short time. Brexit is forever.

Nonsense Rob
Your agument was that we are doing well so we should stay.
My argument is that the EU does poorly and we should therefore leave.
Not misrepresenting anything.

Thanks for your advice, we'll take it on board. But we''ll lock the thread when we think it doesn't interest the members any more. If it doesn't interest you feel free not to read it or take part. We assure you that one thread cannot dominate a website and one thread will only grow if people are interested in it.
What we will say is that we would like to remind all members to keep the thread on track and respect other peoples opinion. If you don't have anything contructive to post please refrain from posting. If we see the thread dying off, then we will step in to lock it.
Thanks

This thread may come alive again, it must have at least a year to run, even if exit discussions are expedited. If parliamentary discussion does not do it the appeal and the final terms certainly will.
The referendum took place.
The remoaners have run out of steam.
But there will be plenty to get our teeth into in the future.
